Art Club Winter Program

  • Mon 7th July - Animalia: Watercolour & Wordplay

Inspired by the legendary children’s book Animalia by Graeme Base, this workshop celebrates wild creatures, colourful watercolour paint, and the art of imaginative storytelling — with a playful twist! From expressive animal portraits to alphabet-inspired adventures, this day is perfect for kids who love both drawing and language.

    Morning Session: Watercolour Animal Portraits
In the morning, artists will create a painty, splashy, colourful portrait of their favourite animal. Using reference images for inspiration, we’ll combine loose, expressive watercolour techniques like drips, bleeds, and gradients with careful drawing and layered detail. This session is all about combining freedom and control: letting watercolour flow, then bringing your animal to life with bold line-work and expressive features.

    Afternoon Session: Animalia Letter Art
In the afternoon, we’ll take inspiration from the iconic Graeme Base and create a sentence where every word starts with the same letter — based on the first letter of your name! For example: “Particularly playful penguins prefer patterned purple people.” Once the sentence is written, we’ll illustrate it using watercolour, drawing, and ink — focusing on layering, imaginative composition, and whimsical detail to bring each silly sentence to life.

A vibrant day of painting, drawing, storytelling, and wordplay - perfect for creative kids who love animals, art, and letting their imagination run wild.

  • Tue 8th July - Tiny Worlds

Step into the world of all things small! In this imaginative and immersive workshop, kids will dream up their own miniature interiors and fill them with handcrafted treasures. Whether it’s a fantastical hideout, artist’s studio, ice cream shop or wild treehouse, it’s all about big creativity on a tiny scale. (For the '90s parents out there — think Polly Pocket meets Mad Max minis!)

    Morning Session: Pop-Up Interiors
In the morning, we’ll use paper construction techniques to build pop-up scenes of imaginative interiors — think dollhouses, dens, or secret rooms. Students will use drawing (coloured pencils and textas) to decorate walls, floors, windows and furniture — turning flat paper into fold-out 3D spaces full of personality and detail.

Afternoon Session: Pocket Treasures in Polymer Clay
In the afternoon, we’ll sculpt miniature items to live inside our tiny rooms — from characters and bookshelves to magical objects and snacks! Made with coloured polymer clay, these tiny treasures can also be turned into necklaces, keychains or pins for those attending just the afternoon session.

A delightful day of small-scale storytelling, where every tiny object tells a big story!

  • Wed 9th July - Bonnard Inspired Painting

Step into the rich, glowing world of Pierre Bonnard - a French painter known for his colourful interiors, dreamy window views, and textured mark-making. This day is perfect for young artists who love colour, storytelling, and seeing beauty in the everyday.

Morning Session: Window Worlds on Canvas
Using small canvases and acrylic paint, students will create layered paintings inspired by the view from a window — real or imagined. From cosy gardens to wild jungles or futuristic cities, they’ll explore light, colour, and mood, just like Bonnard did in his expressive, intimate works.

Afternoon Session: Mixed Media Textured Zines
In the afternoon, we’ll head outside to gather rubbings and drawings of textures from the natural world — tree bark, leaves, footpaths and more. Back in the studio, students will layer these textures into a concertina-style artist book using oil pastels and dry media. They’ll then draw natural elements into and on top of their textures, blending observation and imagination as they build richly layered compositions.

A beautifully tactile day of painting, printing and layering — perfect for those who love colour, nature, and noticing the little things.

  • Thu 10th July - Mash-Up Cartooning Madness

Get ready to mash, mix, and morph your way through a hilarious day of cartoon-style drawing! In this imaginative, hands-on workshop, kids will explore surreal and surprising ways to invent characters using rotating paper, foldable formats and their wildest ideas.

    Morning Session: Mix-and-Match Body Discs
Inspired by vintage spinning toys, we’ll create rotating paper discs with mix-and-match bodies - heads, torsos and legs that swap and spin to form bizarre, brilliant characters! We’ll play with cartooning techniques like proportion, shape exaggeration, movement lines and bold features to bring our creations to life.

    Afternoon Session: Flip-Face Booklets
In the afternoon, we’ll dive into expressive faces - drawing eyes, noses, mouths and heads that fold and flip into each other to create endless mash-ups. Each artist will assemble their own flip-book full of cartoon characters that change with every turn of the page!

A full day of fun, fast, and funny cartooning - perfect for kids who love drawing weird characters, inventing creatures, or just being a little ridiculous with their art!

  • Mon 14th July - Galaxy Makers

Get ready to imagine life beyond Earth in this playful, hands-on day of alien art-making! Whether you join for one session or stay for the full galactic experience, you’ll create bold characters and strange new worlds using sculpture, colour, and a whole lot of imagination.

    Morning Session: Alien Masks
Design and construct a wild and wonderful alien mask using cardboard, collage, paint and markers! Inspired by contemporary artists like Damselfrau and Carolina Romanowska, we’ll explore bold forms, layered materials and expressive character design. Will your alien have three eyes? Glowing horns? A tangled nest of antennae? Build a wearable mask that stretches the limits of identity and imagination using trippy mirrored shapes, bright colours and structural tricks. Perfect for kids who love hands-on making and inventive design!

    Afternoon Session: Glowing Illusion Paintings
In the afternoon, we’ll create atmospheric artworks that give the illusion of glowing neon lights within a speckled galaxy. Using acrylic paint on black canvas and paint markers for details - including metallic accents - artists will design cosmic scenes, glowing space creatures, or otherworldly skylines. This session is all about contrast, colour layering and imaginative world-building.

From bold, wearable alien masks to neon-drenched galaxy paintings, this is a full day of out-of-this-world creativity - perfect for fans of sci-fi, sculpture, and visual storytelling.

  • Tue 15th July - Garden of Imagination 2.0: Pot Painting & Plant Sculpture

Back by popular demand! One of our most-loved workshops returns with fresh ideas and even more room to grow. In this colourful, hands-on day of painting and sculpture, artists will decorate vibrant pots and build one-of-a-kind paper plants to fill them. Whether you're a returning garden artist or joining for the first time, it’s your chance to create a wild, whimsical plant world — no watering required!

    Morning Session: Painted Pots
Start your day by transforming a terracotta pot using acrylic paint and Posca pens. We’ll dive into bold patterns, striking colour combos, and repeated motifs to make your design stand out. No two pots are ever the same — returning artists are welcome to make a matching set or try something totally new!

    Afternoon Session: Paper Plants
In the afternoon, we’ll craft imaginative paper plants that twist, dangle, bloom or surprise! Using mixed media techniques and a medley of materials, kids will invent leafy sculptures that are stripey, sparkly, toothy or entirely made-up. Pop them into your pot (if you joined the morning session) or display them as a stand-alone creation.

A joyful, low-maintenance garden of your own design - perfect for kids who love colour, sculptural play, and growing their imagination.

  • Wed 16th July - Clay Day!

It’s a hands-on day of shaping, squishing, sculpting and creating! In this tactile workshop, we’ll explore two very different types of clay and create two very cool take-home artworks: quirky polymer magnets and glowing ghost lanterns. Come for one session or stay for a full day of clay fun!

Morning Session: Polymer Clay Magnets & Trinkets
Start your day by sculpting a set of fun, expressive fridge magnets and trinkets using colourful polymer clay. From silly faces and cute animals to your favourite foods or made-up creatures - we’ll turn our tiny artworks into magnets, hanging trinkets and even necklaces that can live on your fridge, wall or on you! A great session for those who love small details and playful design.

Afternoon Session: Air Dry Clay Ghost Lanterns
In the afternoon, we’ll switch materials and build whimsical ghost lanterns using air dry clay and tealight cups. Students will sculpt and decorate ghost shaped characters with big personalities - spooky, silly, or sweet - then carve out eyed and small patterned shapes for the light to shine through. A glowing reminder of a magical clay day!

A day of squishy, sculptural fun for kids who love to make with their hands — and take home something truly one-of-a-kind!

  • Thu 17th July - Big Deal Trophies & Ribbons for Everything

Celebrate the big, small, silly and special things in life with this joyful day of making! Whether it’s an award for your favourite snack, a trophy for the quietest pop-off or a ribbon for the best imaginary pet - this is a chance to get creative, get funny, and honour what really matters to you.

    Morning Session: Trophy Sculptures
In the morning, we’ll design and build wild and wonderful trophies using cardboard, foam shapes, holographic card, paint and more! Whether it’s tall and fancy or weird and wobbly, artists will create their own 3D award to celebrate something they love - like “Best Made-up Word”, “Snack Master” or “I Actually Cleaned My Room.” A hands-on session of bold building, joyful design and serious silliness.

    Afternoon Session: Collaged Ribbon Awards
In the afternoon, we’ll craft decorative 2D award ribbons using layered collage images, drawing, textured paper and sparkle. These awards don’t need words - instead, we’ll use images and design to tell the story of what they represent. Kids might make a ribbon for a friend, a parent, their cat, or even themselves - something meaningful, mysterious or just plain hilarious.

A playful and affirming day that turns everyday brilliance into art — because anything can be worth celebrating, and it’s fun to make a big deal out of it!

Fri 18th July -
Come & Try D&D

Full Day, Ages 8-13

Ever wanted to try Dungeons & Dragons?

Through this magical game, step into a world of brave knights, sneaky goblins, fire-breathing friends and mysterious treasures! In this playful, hands-on day of storytelling and creativity, kids will design their own characters and take part in a kid-friendly, beginner version of Dungeons & Dragons - a simplified tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) that uses imagination, collaboration, and dice to guide the adventure. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to get into TTRPGs - no reading rules, just drawing, making, and playing! Perfect for first-timers, daydreamers, and curious creatives.

Morning Session: Character Creation
In the morning, we’ll build our own heroes from the ground up - choosing an adventurer type, magical equipment, and special powers using our custom Studio Ruby character sheets. Kids will then draw and decorate their hero and create a mini figurine ready for the afternoon quest.

Afternoon Session: The Quest for the Missing Treasure
In the afternoon, we’ll play a short, simplified D&D-style game using just one die, big ideas, and the power of imagination. Players will join forces on a light-hearted, collaborative quest set in a medieval world full of mystery and hidden treasure.

This is theatre of the mind storytelling - no screens, no game boards, just figurines, teamwork, and adventurous problem-solving.

What you’ll take home:

  • Your own personalised, illustrated character sheet

  • Your own minature of your hero

  • Your very own 20-sided die

  • An understanding of how TTRPG’s are played

A joyful day of character creation and cooperative storytelling, perfect for beginners. Come for the creativity, stay for the treasure — and leave with a story you helped bring to life.
