Mon 7th - Animalia: Watercolour & Wordplay
Animal Watercolour Painting & Illustration
Animal Watercolour Painting & Illustration
Inspired by the legendary children’s book Animalia by Graeme Base, this workshop celebrates wild creatures, colourful watercolour paint, and the art of imaginative storytelling — with a playful twist! From expressive animal portraits to alphabet-inspired adventures, this day is perfect for kids who love both drawing and language.
Morning Session: Watercolour Animal Portraits
In the morning, artists will create a painty, splashy, colourful portrait of their favourite animal. Using reference images for inspiration, we’ll combine loose, expressive watercolour techniques like drips, bleeds, and gradients with careful drawing and layered detail. This session is all about combining freedom and control: letting watercolour flow, then bringing your animal to life with bold line-work and expressive features.
Afternoon Session: Animalia Letter Art
In the afternoon, we’ll take inspiration from the iconic Graeme Base and create a sentence where every word starts with the same letter — based on the first letter of your name! For example: “Particularly playful penguins prefer patterned purple people.” Once the sentence is written, we’ll illustrate it using watercolour, drawing, and ink — focusing on layering, imaginative composition, and whimsical detail to bring each silly sentence to life.
A vibrant day of painting, drawing, storytelling, and wordplay - perfect for creative kids who love animals, art, and letting their imagination run wild.
