In this visually playful, STEM-inspired art workshop, we’ll explore how colour, light, and lenses can trick the eye — and how artists can use that to create magical illusions and layered drawings. From wearable sculpture to secret images, this day is full of discovery and wonder.
Morning Session – Build Your Art Glasses We’ll start by designing and building a pair of custom art glasses with interchangeable coloured lenses. Look super fly in your new specs — but also, when you look through them, they’ll reveal or hide different parts of your drawings depending on which colours you use! Once the glasses are built, we’ll test how different colours react. Viewed normally, you’ll see everything; viewed through your lenses, half the image will vanish.
Afternoon Session – Illusion Art & Secret Messages In the afternoon, we’ll apply our optical tricks to a larger layered drawing of an eye, with secret images or messages hidden in plain sight. Focus on contrast, line weight, and placement to control what appears and disappears. You might create two versions of a scene, a hidden world inside a pupil, or even a drawing with a puzzle built in.
